SC Residence
A Mindful Collective.
Situated at Western Mid-Levels, Hong Kong, a multifaceted district where history and modern converge, this one-bedroom apartment has been reimagined as a mindful refuge for a creative couple. Contrasting Hong Kong’s frenetic energy, this residence is designed to cultivate mindfulness, spark creativity, and connect like-minded individuals.
Driven by the design philosophies of mid-century modern, this home is a study in timeless classiness and functional living. The space is a deliberate collage reflecting their taste, travels, and vibrant social life. Incorporating organic elements, it creates a haven that fosters both introspection and connection with the wider world, celebrating quality of life.
House of Forme worked with the client on their interior design, FF&E design and styling.
Mid-century with a Modern Soul.
The entrance sets the tone for this artistic home. Full-length mirrors line the wooden parquet hallway, visually expanding the space while offering a convenient spot for a final outfit check. At the end of the hallway, a curved walnut display shelf serves as a semi-partition to the rest of the home, showcasing daily items. A hidden stool beneath the shelf provides a comfortable seat for changing shoes, and brass hooks along the side provide convenient coat storage.
The open-plan living space is thoughtfully divided into the living area and dining area. Upon entering the living area, the eye is immediately drawn to a grand bookshelf, showcasing the couple’s extensive collection of books and spirits. The walls are finished with artisan paint, complemented by wooden veneer details, creating a mid-century modern ambiance.
Adjacent to the bookshelf are art work collected during the couple’s travels. Concealed gallery tracks are integrated into the walls, providing a flexible system for rotation and display of their art collection. A built-in work station offers a convenient area for work and creativity.
Form follows function. Beauty follows both.
A pantry-style approach has been taken for the dining space, balancing functionality and aesthetics. A long banquet runs along the large windows, with built-in storage discreetly hidden beneath. Walnut-toned furniture, including the iconic Jeanneret chair, completes the dining area, adding a touch of mid-century charm. Bespoke alabaster stone lighting nearby echoes the design’s elegance.
To cater to the couple’s passion for cooking, a fully equipped kitchen is integrated into the space. To maximise functionality, the laundry appliances and dishwasher are all concealed. A rack is designed for storing and displaying sauces and cooking essentials. Rough, imported glazed tiles of high durability due to its wear-and-tear nature, line the back wall. Dark timber veneer adds a contrasting warmth to the tiles and balances the abundant natural light.
Where Interests Shape the Space.
The mindful atmosphere of the residence adds on with thoughtful details. A warm colour palette of burgundy, brass and walnut wooden timber is complemented by an olive-green sofa, perfectly echoing the plantation around the space. Celebrating the couple’s love of music, compartments are created to showcase their vinyl collection.
A curated selection of lighting, from Akari Lanterns, to vintage portable balloon lamps, illuminates every corner of the room. Each fixture, with a unique glow and silhouette, is a nod to mid-century design. Chequered wooden floorings evoke the nostalgia of old Hong Kong, reimagined with a new type of wood. A rare touch, a wooden ceiling fan provides natural ventilation to the couple’s liking.
Dwelling In Style.
A distinct ambiance defines the bedroom. One is welcomed by a grey fabric sofa with grey fabric upon entering, extending from the headboard. The soft glow of an alabaster bedside lamp makes it the perfect setting for late-night reading. The headboard’s burgundy, organic leather juxtaposes beautifully with the dark walnut, adding a layer to the room’s serenity.
Walnut and brass accents are found throughout. Fluted wardrobe doors with brass handles reveal a hidden walk-in closet, providing a private dressing space. A built-in makeup area, concealed behind light oak doors, features custom cabinets and lighting. The unveiling of the makeup area feels almost theatrical, as if opening a jewellery cabinet.
A Palette for Pause.
The bathroom is enlivened by a playful splash of colour. Imported olive green tiles are arranged in a dynamic orientation in the shower, creating a vibrant accent wall. Next to the mid-century-inspired mirror cabinet is a textured glass lampshade casting a diffused glow. The bespoke cabinet is decorated with fluted details, echoing design elements found throughout the residence.
