Sunsmith Yun Ping

The Home of Craft.

Sunsmith Yun Ping’s gallery space and workshop is an experiential consideration of Hong Kong heritage and traditional artistry. Located in one of the busiest districts in Hong Kong, the goldsmith brand’s expansion into workshopping and well-curated retail can be found on the first floor of a historic 1960s Hong Kong ‘Tong Lau’. The local brand’s homage to its original design accentuates the industrial elements on the iconic Chinese walk-up building, capturing the eyes of passers-by with its distinctive facade. Glowing orbs and circular windows balance out the gallery’s strong geometric lines, acting as both a way-finding guide and a subtle reference to Sunsmith’s brand mark.

House of Forme worked with the client on their interior design, project management, ff&e design and brand environments.

Inspired by a Uniquely Hong Kong Tradition

Our design concept not only paid tribute to the emblematic structures of ‘Tong Lau’, but also to Hong Kong’s bamboo scaffolding, inspiring bespoke display shelves and bronze handholds constructed to mimic bamboo columns. The scaffolding is easily interchangeable for an ever-evolving display of precious objects, emulating the flexibility of bamboo. Multiple layers of curated craft are displayed across the room, celebrating stories and techniques unique to various places around the world. Overhead, canvases weave between extended bronze frames, softening the acoustics of the metal workshop next door.

Enhancing Spatial Narratives

As an extension to the gallery’s curated exhibition, we collaborated with Sunsmith’s craftsmen to create a bespoke display cabinet, joining the legacies of craftsmanship presented across the room. Inspired by the bronze treatments of its surroundings, the custom-made cabinet features hammered bronze plating at its base and a two-way display mechanism that allows accessibility from both sides.

The Art of Metalwork

Loosely partitioned into pockets for individual, group, or specialised workshopping, Sunsmith offers a myriad of classes, exemplified by the variety of tools and workbenches displayed across the area. Intentionally designed to be an interactive and engaging space, the workshop features acoustic ceiling panels, low seating, and a glass display that stretches across the facade, allowing passers-by a glimpse into a space ideal for events, classes, and workshops.
